A major focus is on developing their ability to respond to questions with a sophisticated, evidence based argument that stems from a thorough understanding of characterisation and themes. This is seen in both their prose and drama answers. Alternative interpretations are encouraged particularly in poetry as are engagement with critics. Challenging texts such as A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams and the Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde assist in this development.
