Attendance
BE ON TIME
The bell at 8.35 am signals that students should move to their tutor rooms to be seated by 8.40 am when the register is taken. Always make sure you are at the right classroom at the start of each lesson
SIGNING IN AND OUT
If you arrive after registration, report to the school office to sign in. If you need to leave school for an appointment, you must sign out at the school office. You will need a note from home signed by your tutor.
ABSENCE & ILLNESS
If you are unwell and unable to attend school, a telephone call before 9.30 am on the first day is required. If the absence extends to several days, please let us know when you are going to return to school. We do require a written explanation for the absence even if a phone call has been made. If you feel really unwell tell a teacher. If you have an accident, or are taken ill, a first-aider will be contacted.
Your parents will be contacted should you need to leave school.
Do not leave the school or go home without permission
STUDENT ATTENDANCE POLICY
Absence due to illness
Medical, Dental and Health Appointments
Families are asked, wherever possible, to arrange these appointments outside of the school day. Where this is not possible, families should inform the student’s form tutor of an appointment via a written note.
Other reasons for absence
A group of these are unacceptable reasons for absence from school and permission will not be given under any circumstances. Any such absence will be considered as a breach of the legal obligation to attend school. Examplesinclude shopping trips, birthdays and receiving deliveries at home.
A second group may be authorised at the discretion of the Headteacher. Examples include performance with musical groups, representative sports, bereavement, family illness or other compassionate grounds. Families seeking discretionary permission for such authorised absence should write to the Headteacher in advance of the proposed absence giving details of the reasons for the request.
It is a clear expectation in law that families should not take students on holiday in term time. The law states that there is no right to absence for this purpose. Any requests for permission for absence due to holidays should explain the reasons why the holiday cannot be taken during the vacation. The price of the holiday or availability of flights are insufficient reasons to grant leave of absence. The Headteacher will also consider the student’s attendance record, their academic progress, the stage of their education and their age. Any absence without permission will be marked on the student’s records as ‘Unauthorised’. Such figures are regularly requested as part of a school reference. Permission will not be granted retrospectively under any circumstances.
